Yala and the Southern Parks

Yala's Block One has the highest recorded density of leopards of any protected area in the world, which is why it is busy. Sightings are genuinely common but not guaranteed, and an honest guide will say so. The park closes each year around September for the drought; February to July is the reliable window. Udawalawe, two hours west, is the better park for elephants and considerably calmer. Herds are visible almost every drive, often at close range along the tank bunds, and the open terrain means you see them properly rather than glimpsing a flank through scrub. Bundala, on the coast, is the one for birds — flamingos in winter, and far fewer vehicles than either of the others. A dawn start matters in all three: animals move at the edges of the day and shelter through the middle of it.
