Ancient Kingdoms
Seven days through the Cultural Triangle and the hills behind it
A week among rock fortresses, cave temples and tank-fed plains, ending in the cool of the hill country. Paced so that the climbs happen at first light and the middle of the day belongs to you.
Day by day
Arrival in Colombo
Met at Bandaranaike and driven north as the heat goes out of the day. An easy first night rather than a long transfer.
Sigiriya
A first-light climb before the rock heats up, then the afternoon free. The mirror wall and the frescoes reward a slow pace on the way down.
Dambulla and Polonnaruwa
The cave temples in the cool of the morning, then Polonnaruwa by bicycle among the ruins of the second capital.
Anuradhapura
The oldest of the capitals, still an active pilgrimage site. Quieter and greener than Polonnaruwa, and best taken slowly.
South to Kandy
A morning drive through spice country, arriving in time for the evening puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
Kandy and the tea roads
The botanical gardens at Peradeniya, then the road climbing into tea. The temperature drops as you go.
Return to Colombo
A last morning in the hills before the drive down, timed to your flight.
