Hill Country by Train
Eight days from Kandy to the coast, with the mountain railway at its centre
The Kandy to Ella line is one of the great train journeys, and this itinerary is built around it rather than squeezing it in. Reserved seats, unhurried days at either end, and a finish on the south coast.
Day by day
Arrival
Met at the airport and driven to a first night near Negombo or Colombo, whichever suits your arrival time.
To Kandy
North-east through the spice gardens, arriving for the evening ceremony at the temple.
Kandy
Peradeniya gardens in the morning and the lake in the late afternoon.
The train to Ella
The mountain line through tea estates and tunnels. Around seven hours, and worth every one of them.
Ella
Little Adam's Peak at dawn, the Nine Arch Bridge timed to a train, and an afternoon that is yours.
Horton Plains
An early start for World's End before the cloud closes in, then back down to Ella.
South to the coast
Down the escarpment to the sea, with a stop at a working tea factory on the way.
