South Coast and Galle

Five unhurried days between a Dutch fort and the bays east of it

A short, slow itinerary for the December to March season: Galle Fort, the beaches running east, and blue whales off Mirissa if the dates suit. Built for people who would rather see three places properly than eight in passing.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Arrival and south

    Straight down the coastal expressway; roughly two hours from the airport to Galle.

  2. Day 2

    Galle Fort

    The ramparts early, the streets and the lighthouse later, and the sunset from the walls.

  3. Day 3

    Mirissa

    An optional pre-dawn boat for blue whales between November and April, then the day at leisure.

  4. Day 4

    The eastern bays

    Weligama, Tangalle and the quieter stretches beyond, at whatever pace you like.

  5. Day 5

    Departure

    North to the airport, allowing three hours for the drive.
